Starr has been using the Accelerated Reading (AR) program for 13 years! Last year, Starr students read over 26,000 books. This year we would like the students to again read over 26,000 books. If we meet this goal, every student who participated in the AR program will be invited to an extra special AR party at the end of the school year.
Please contact your child's teacher with any questions or concerns regarding AR. To learn more about Starr's Accelerated Reader Incentive Program, click on the following link. Starr Accelerated Reader Incentive Program Information.
At the present time we need volunteers who can donate 30 minutes or more a week helping students with reading. During the sessions the students orally read and discuss various stories with the volunteer. The students complete basic questions over the story (comprehension) and work on building vocabulary, language skills, writing skills, etc. The program is very beneficial. It not only provides one-on-one instruction for our students but also builds a support system between the community and school.
The Starr Elementary staff, in cooperation with students, families and community members, is committed to the promotion of academic achievement, respect for others, and responsibility for one's self and one's actions in an atmosphere of friendliness towards others.
